The First Map of Slovenian Regions

27. 6. 2011

Did you know that Peter Kosler who, together with his brothers, founded the precursor of today’s Union Brewery, also produced the first map of ethnic Slovene regions?
Encouraged by the spirit of the Spring of Nations, Kosler started working on his map in 1848, when the idea of joining together all Slovenian territory within the Habsburg Empire first came to life. In 1853, however, the Viennese military authorities sequestrated the map prior to its publication and Peter Kosler was put on trial. Although found not guilty by the court, the map only enjoyed publication in 1861, and became the first in the modern era to show place names in the indigenous Slovenian language rather than German. »Kosler's Slovenia« substantially exceeds the territory of today’s state, and its borders reach into what is today Austrian Carinthia, while in the south they encompass Istria together with a large portion of Quarner and the islands of the northern Adriatic.
